New Technology Business News Source Launches in Chicago
ChicagoTechNews.com aims to fill the gaps in coverage of the Chicago technology business community.

CHICAGO, IL, December 17, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Technology news in Chicago has always been a touchy subject," explains Todd Allen, publisher of Chicago Tech News, the new source for news in Chicago's technology business community. "No one is happy with the coverage being offered by the mainstream press. In fact, Jason Fried of 37Signals publically lambasted editors from Crain's Chicago Business and the Chicago Tribune at one of the first Chicago New Media Summit meetings. It was the case eight years ago, when I was covering what was effectively the New Media beat for the Tribune's business section. It was the case in 2002, which was the first time I was approached about starting up an angel investor-backed independent online news site. It was still the case at last month's Colonel Tribune Tweet-Up, where people were disappointed in both the print and local online news options. The community has been asking for an alternative to the status quo for years. I just hope they like what I have to offer."

ChicagoTechNews.com launched the week of December 8th, with a piece on allegations of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich planning on diverting state science and technology funds to Wrigley Field, a look at the probably impact of Barak Obama's presidency on Illinois businesses, and an interview with former Illinois Technology Development Alliance president and current Kansas Bioscience Organization president Tom Thornton on why he left Illinois for Kansas and the role of government grants in funding a start-up.

"The difference with Chicago Tech News is working experience with the technology trade," Allen offers. "I've consulted on technology since the mid-90's. Everything from Fortune 500 accounts to the American Medical Association and I teach an e-Business course at Columbia College Chicago. My Government Affairs columnist was in Governor Edgar's Cabinet and also a Vice President of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce. My Electronic Discovery columnist is an editor of The Sedona Principles. We've seen how the subject matter works in the field."

Traditionally splitting time between technology consulting and journalism, Allen has written for Chicago Tribune, Publisher's Weekly and New York Resident on topics ranging from New Media to being an NBA columnist. He is the author of four books, including "The Economics of Web Comics, Second Edition" and the humor anthology "E-Mail from Nigeria."

"Chicago is a bit eclectic in how it consumes news," Allen says. "Some people like websites, so www.ChicagoTechNews.com is the URL. Some people like blogs, so we're starting out with WordPress as a content management system and you can snatch that RSS feed if that's what you like. Some people like newsletters, and we'll be sending one out summarizing the content at least once a week. Some people still like print, and that's why they have printers. The market will dictate the format. This is the age of media convergence, so we're going to be flexible with the packaging."
